18 for 2018 – February update

Happy Friday and welcome to February!

I can’t believe that January is already over, the first month of the year has just gone by so fast! This is my update for my 18 for 2018, and I’m quite excited with what I’ve accomplished this month!

18 letters sent to friends – 0/18
With the interstate move I would like to keep in contact with friends so I want to make the effort to send them handwritten letter throughout the year.

None this month, but this is because I’m actually visiting back next month. I think I might next month though, as I got my best friend into knitting and would like to send her some new knitting needles 🙂

17 new recipes tried – 5/17
If you’ve been following me for a while you will know that I love cooking and baking so this should be pretty easy. Plus, the monthly bake-along will definitely help me with this one!

I’ve tried a few new recipes this month. The first one was the ginger snap recipe from the fantastic bake-along. I have also tried to make crackers, and they were so amazing I’ve made several batches already! I got the recipe here. I’ve also made a few recipes from one of Jamie Oliver’s cooking book I got for Christmas.

16 painted units of miniatures – 0/16
My husband and I play a miniature game and one of the fun parts is to build and paint our own miniatures. I haven’t done much last year so I hope to catch up this year by painting more models.

I have been working on two units but I haven’t finished any yet. Hopefully in February.

15 books read – 0/15
I’ve decided to tune down this goal from last year, as I don’t have a lot of time to read. But I feel like 15 would be a good number to reach this year.

This month just has been so busy I didn’t get time to read books, lots of papers for my thesis, but unfortunately that doesn’t count!

14 mitered squares added to my memory blanket – 0/14
I have started a knitted memory blanket using my scraps of yarn from previous projects (mostly socks) and I’d like to see it grow this year.

I haven’t added any square this month, but I have a few projects using 4ply yarn, so I will be able to add more soon hopefully!

13 batches of biscuits made and eaten – 2/13
Again, with the bake-along this should be quite easy to accomplish!

I have done two this month, one was the gingersnaps and I made montecaos again, as they are my husband’s absolute favourite!

12 pairs of socks – 1/12
We have real winters in Melbourne, so hubby and I will definitely need new socks, I thought one per month was a manageable goal.

I have finished my Candy Corn socks and I have made a start on a pair for hubby, so I’m doing pretty well with this goal.

11 new stitch markers made – 0/11
I have been playing with shrinking plastic lately and I’d like to make new stitch markers using some cute drawings.

I haven’t really thought about this goal yet, but I am thinking I’d like to use some scientific drawings or nerdy themes.

10 new movies seen – 3/10
We go to the movies almost every week, so I think this goal will be easy to reach, but it will give me a change to blog about movies I see a bit more.

I feel like there weren’t that many good movies coming out in January but I still managed three, Pitch Perfect, The Greatest Showman and the last Maze Runner. My favourite was the Greatest Showman, it really had a great story and I loved the songs ❤

9 amigurumi made – 1/9
I obviously love amigurumi enough to design some! I want to precise that those 9 amigurumi will be from other designers, I might even participate in another ami-along.

I have finished an awesome whale amigurumi that I talked about on Wednesday. I’m in love with it and can’t wait to give it to my friend!

8 months cross-stitched on the Snowflower diaries Joyful world calendar – 1/8
This did not get worked on at all last year, so I’d like to finish it this year.

I’ve actually finished the May instalment of the Joyful world. Very excited to have started on this again, it’s just so cute!

7 games of 40k played with hubby 1/7
The good thing with painting miniatures is that I will definitely want to play more (I’m hoping anyway) and this will definitely be a fun activity to do with my husband.

We’ve had one game so far, and I’ve smashed hubby mwahaha! I forgot to take a picture of the massacre though but I will next time for sure!

6 new designs published – 2/6
As you know I already have two new designs that I need to write up and publish. I have also started on a knitted shawl design using the beautiful yarn I got in NZ. Very excited about this one!

I’m stoked with this goal, I can’t believe I managed to publish both Wiley and Sandy‘s patterns this month, yay!

5 km ran without stopping – in progress
This doesn’t seem like much but currently I can’t run more than a few minutes without having to slow down to a walk, so I’d like to be able to actually run without dying for 5 km!

I’ve been actively training for this, I’ve gone for several 30 min runs, with intervals to increase my cardio and I’m feeling really good about it. I haven’t done much last week though as it’s been consistently above 35°C during the day and well above 25°C at night. Hopefully it cools down in the next few weeks and I can train some more.

4 LOTR squares finished – 1/4
Yes I know I’ve been making this for ages but 2018 is the year I get it finished!

I’ve gotten back into this as well, yay! I’ve finished Gimli and I think he is pretty awesome 🙂

IMG_7571

3 jumpers knitted – 0/3
Similarly to the need for socks, I will need more jumpers this year! I already have the yarn and a pattern for my first jumper so I’m hoping this goes smoothly.

I haven’t cast this on yet but I do have the yarn ready so maybe I’ll cast on in February 🙂 although I have a lot of WIPs as usual!

2 getaway trips – 0/2
We are trying to save money for a house deposit this year, but I’d still like to get a couple weekends away with hubby. We already have one planned, we will be going to the Bendigo sheep and wool show in July.

We have planned to go back to Brisbane for a wedding in March, does that count as a getaway? If yes that will be the first one of the year 🙂

1 thesis submitted – 0/1
I’m so keen to finish my PhD, so this is definitely my n°1 goal this year!

I have my thesis review next week, so this is definitely getting closer, wish me luck!

I hope you have all been getting on great with your goals too

Happy New Year! 18 for 2018

Happy New Year everyone!

I wish you all good health, happiness and lots of creativity for this new year and I hope that all your dreams to come true for 2018.

You may know that last year was all about change for me, with moving houses, a new job for hubby and working on my PhD from home. This year, I want it to be about growth. My hope for 2018 is to grow professionally, hopefully finding a post-doc, but also personally. I would like to grow my crochet and knitting skills and also to grow as a designer. I’ve been really encouraged by your kind words and I’m very excited for what’s to come.

Last year, I kept on seeing the 17 for 2017 goals and this year I’ve decided to join with 18 for 2018. I will keep you updated every month with how my goals are going and hopefully I make it through most of them during the year.

October 2017 wrap up

Happy Friday!

I hope you’ve all had a great week. Because it’s the beginning of the month again I thought I would share my makes from October with you.

On the knitting front, I’ve finished my Colour block jumper and my Hermione’s Everyday Socks and I’ve been loving both so much!

I’ve done quite a bit of crochet as well, mostly amigurumis, and I’m in the process of designing another ami for the amigurumipatterns.net contest. I’ve shown you Wiley the Wisp, my cute dolls and all my Halloween makes.

And of course, now that I’ve finished moving houses for a while, I could participate in our Fantastic Bake-along once again!

I have plenty of things planned for November! For one, I have joined a Hand Quilt-Along hosted by the beautiful Kathy from Sewing etc. I’m super excited about this as it will give me the opportunity to work on my EPP. I have also decided to join Sewchet’s stitching santa and I can’t wait to get assigned my partner and go yarn shopping for them!

I wish you all a wonderful November ❤️

Projects and goals for the end of the year

Happy Friday!

Where have the months gone? With October already well started, I thought I would do a quick recap of the projects I have started but have yet to complete this year.

Crochet wise, there are 3 main projects I’d like to progress on.

The first one is my snowflake afghan, which has been slightly abandoned. Apparently last time I posted about it I could find the motivation to finish it, and I’d say that I still haven’t!

I also joined a granny square blanket project earlier this year but I got very unmotivated with it, even though a lot of squares are now done.

And lastly my LOTR graphghan, but I have actually been working on that, it’s just that the centre square is taking aaaaages… 😓

Now, with cross stitch, I feel like I’ve been pretty good!

Of course I need to finish Helene’s stitch alongs but I’ve nearly caught up on the September one so that should be okay 🙂

Then I need to keep going with the snowflower diaries joyful world calendar, I would love to gift it to my nana for Christmas.

And finally, a pretty old project I had was to stitch a Thumbelina cushion, adding from the bookmark I have with all the costumes she wears in the movie. That would also make a nice Christmas present as well for my Aunty.

That’s it from me, but do you guys have projects to finish by the end of the year?

P.S. I promised a picture of the Salamanca shawl around my neck, so here it is!

Organisation is key!

Is it just me, or the beginning of the year always makes you want to be more organised?

With such a big year coming up (wedding to prepare, Europe trip, hopefully a few more papers published) I felt like I needed extra help to get organised. I came accross the bullet journal concept. I thought I should give it a try. I had this cool game of thrones journal that I thought would be great for the job.
I really love that I can set up long term monthly goals but also more precise and reachable daily goals. I’ve also made a colour calendar, with a few things I want to work on everyday (like not biting my nails or practicing my Italian) it’s so nice to be able to visualise goals and it’s very satisfactory to draw a little cross when I’ve reached a goal (as small as it may be).

I have also been (once again) trying to de clutter my drawers (I own too many clothes it’s just ridiculous). Because some were not even wearable (mostly holes) I thought that instead of throwing them away I would do something creative and so I turned them into tshit yarn. Only a few more to go!

That’s it for today!

Hope you’re all having a great week 🙂

😘

December is here!

Hello beautiful people!

I can’t believe it is already December, where did time go?

I have a few WIPs to show you today and because this is a new month it is also time to review my goals list!

• Craft Christmas presents and cute decorations for our first Christmas in our house. So far, I have made 1 tree ornament and designed a snowflake pattern that you can use as christmas coasters or just hang in the tree. I’ve also almost finished all my presents for my family, and they will be posted by the end of the week with customised cards.

• Continue the Poké-alphabet updates on Friday. I have been falling behind a little bit with this one but I’m sure I can catch up once Christmas is over

• Post #WIPWednesdays on Wednesdays. Definitely been happening!

PERSONAL

• Book hotels for Europe next year. Still not done, I should really take care of that this month

• Send invites and get a DJ for the wedding. The invites are ready to be sent by the end of the month, I’m still chasing up a few addresses. No idea for the DJ though, even if we have been thinking about songs 🙂

Find another class I like at my gym. Found it! I now go to BodyBalance, it’s a mix of yoga, pilates and tai chi, pretty cool.

• Run 1k under 6 min. Didn’t happen this month but I have made progresses, I’ve reduced my time to almost under 7 (7:08 to be exact, I started at 7:48).

WORK

• Finish writing my second paper for my PhD. Still waiting on some experiments, but I’ve been working on some figures and they look pretty good so far.

• Keep my LinkedIn and ResearchGate profiles up to date. Still going good for this month!

So you’ve seen one of my WIPs (the cross stitch Little Prince). My second one is a crochet diorama. Not sure I’ve mentioned this yet, but I’m a marine biologist, so I’m making an underwater scenery.

I found the lobster pattern here, but the lobster only had 8 legs in the pattern (6 legs plus claws) and I couldn’t deal with it (lobsters are decapods, which means they have 10 legs). So I just added 2 more legs to it! All the rest was done ‘freestyle’. I’ve been trying to experiment more without pattern lately and it’s been a good experience.

I’m hoping to add a few jellyfish and maybe some sea stars.

Christmas is almost there! yay!

Hope you all have a lovely month of December 😉

X

October goals review and November goals

Hi peeps!

I didn’t get time to post yesterday, my day at work was pretty full on and I forgot when I got home 🙂

It is this time of the month again when new goals should be set!

Those were October goals, I crossed the ones that are finished and I don’t think I’ll add too many new ones considering I want to finish the ones I already have!

CRAFTS

Finish my CAL (should be done in 2 weeks – posts on Friday). Finished! Hooray! Pics here.

Find another WIP to post every Friday when the CAL is completed (already have a few ideas!). Poké-alphabet with Friday updates

•  Post regular updates of my Edx programming course (Mondays). I abandoned that, I did not get time to do more with work but I have until March so I might get back to it.

• Craft Christmas presents and cute decorations for our first Christmas in our house (we went to my parents’ last year). Not started but definitely on the list for this month!

• Continue the Poké-alphabet updates on Friday.

• Post #WIPWednesdays on Wednesdays.

PERSONAL

• Prepare my itinerary for Europe next July. Flights are booked, honey moon cruise is booked, itinerary is almost planned, I only need to book hotels now!

• Finish preparations for my wedding next year. Everything is ready for France, I have my dress, the venue, the food planned, but we still need to get a DJ and send the invites.

• Go to the gym at least twice a week (my aqua gym classes have been cancelled, so I need to find something else I like to do). I have been, it was hard to get motivated but I have started to run a little and do weights. I haven’t found anything as good as aqua gym that I can go to, but my new challenge is to walk/run 1km under 6 minutes.

WORK

• Finish writing my second paper for my PhD. Done the intro and methods, I just started on my results but still waiting for some experiments to finish, so I’d say I’m on track.

• Keep my LinkedIn and ResearchGate profiles up to date. Done that as well, but obviously it’s a long run goal 🙂

What are your goals for this month of November?

Week off and new goals

Hi guys!

You are probably wondering where week 9 is for my Mystery Afghan CAL. Well, I took a break this week. With the field trip I didn’t really get time to have any crochet done and I also have to finish the birthday present for my friend (her birthday was yesterday and we are celebrating today!).

Little bulbasaur is all finished and ready for his new home! I also attached a string a the top so the necklace/bag hanger is complete!

I have also completed my first MOOC on the rise of superheroes from the Smithsonian, I will post my drawings in here later. Some of the art/stories submitted by the other participants were pretty amazing!

I was happy I pulled through and did all the assignments in time, so I decided to challenge myself a bit more, so I am now enrolled to the Think. Create. Code.  course from  university of Adelaide. You have probably guessed it, it’s a programming course and it is mainly focused on digital art creation.

Here are a few screenshots of what I have coded so far for the course.

Also, because we have entered the last quarter of the year, I have decided to make a list of what I want to achieve for the end of the year:

CRAFTS

• Finish my CAL (should be done in 2 weeks – posts on Friday).

• Find another WIP to post every Friday when the CAL is completed (already have a few ideas!).

•  Post regular updates of my Edx programming course (Mondays).

• Craft Christmas presents and cute decorations for our first Christmas in our house (we went to my parents’ last year).

PERSONAL

• Prepare my itinerary for Europe next July.

• Finish preparations for my wedding next year.

• Go to the gym at least twice a week (my aqua gym classes have been cancelled, so I need to find something else I like to do).

WORK

• Finish writing my second paper for my PhD.

• Keep my LinkedIn and ResearchGate profiles up to date.

What do you have planned for the end of 2015?
