FO Friday – something different

Happy Friday!

I hope you’ve all had a great week, my friend left yesterday and I’m a bit sad the she’s gone but on the bright side I’m back full time with blogging! (still the usual 3 x a week , but you know I’ll be able to actually read more and hopefully respond slightly faster, so that’s a win!)

I know I’ve said that I wouldn’t really make any Christmas gifts, but then I actually thought of some really good and fast gifts to make for my nana and my aunty, as them and my grandpa are visiting for Christmas. So, I have decided to hand stitch them some gifts!

You probably remember (if you were following me at the time) that I went to a craft fair in  Brisbane in September? When I was there, I bought some really cute buttons and a cool diy ornament kit from Krazy Kreations.

Isn’t that going to be super cute? This will be for my nana, but today I want to share with you the finished I made for my aunty.

I spend a good while looking for the perfect fabric for this, as I had a pretty clear idea in mind. This is what I ended with (excuse the poor lighting on the left fabric, it’s meant to be blue!).

I then hand drew the motifs I wanted and used my rusty appliqué skills. I’m super happy with how it turned out, and all that was left to do was to write a cute sentence at the top (it means “hop with happiness” in French, pun intended) and sew on the buttons.

Did I mention my aunty loves frogs? I think it’s a very effective gift, and I know that she will love it because it has frogs! I can’t wait for her to see it 🙂

How is your Christmas gift making going? I’d love to hear about your more ambitious projects!

Filet crochet and appliqué

Happy Wednesday!

I have finally made trials for a shark appliqué, and I’m really happy with the results! What do you guys think?

I’ve also been trying filet crochet, and I have to say that it’s such a cool technique! I’ve done some starfish and I’ve tried either having the starfish in ‘solid’ or in ‘filet’. I’m not sure which one I prefer, the idea would be to turn one of those into a shawl. I think that I will use the design on the left regardless, I like that starfish better than the other one. Which one do you prefer?

I’m also hoping to get some cross stitch finished by Friday, but we’ll see, this week has been crazy!

Ripple blanket

Happy Wednesday readers!

My best friend’s birthday is coming up in a few weeks and I really wanted to make him something special. He was a bit depressed because we are leaving the “youth” age group, so I knew I had to make something happy and bright.
I’ve settled on a marine themed blanket, so I’m using the ripple stitch to imitate waves and I will have 4 different shades of blue, with smaller amounts for the lighter blue and a lot of the darker blue to imitate the different depth of the sea. I’ve already finished one of my skeins of yarn, the lightest blue, and just started on the second one. I think that I might need to go buy some more at that rate but I’ll see once I’ve finished this second colour.

My idea is then to apply appliqué fish, shells and other marine creatures to make an underwater scene. It’s been working up quite fast (I’ve started on Monday) so hopefully I can get the base blanket done, block it (it will need it!), and still get some time to play around with appliqués!

This is what I’ve freehanded so far, I’ve made the shell in crocodile stitch to give some texture.

Do you guys have a favourite marine themed appliqué that you think I should really include? And do you have any suggestion on the best way to attach them to the blanket once it’s finished?
