Happy Friday everyone and happy Australia day to everyone living in the country of Oz!
I’ve had a pretty relaxing day, doing absolutely nothing! How great?
I’ve finished my shawl made of possum blend yarn, and wanted to share that with you today. I’m really in love with it, it’s just so soft against my neck but we have been having crazy high temperatures so I haven’t had much opportunity to wear it. I really like the lacy pattern I’ve used, it’s so simple yet so effective in my opinion. Here it is!
I also needed your advice, what do you think I should call this shawl? Please let me know in the comments!
excuse my ignorance, but is the yarn actually made from possum fur??? I’m just trying to imagine that lol.
You look very happy indeed, modelling your new shawl ^^

Yes Claire, I know it sounds crazy but in new zealand, they blend some possum fur into yarn! Apparently there are too many possum (they are invasive there) so it’s a way to try to reduce the possum population 🙂 I thought it was super cool so I had to buy the yarn! The mix is 60% wool, 30% possum and 10% silk.

Beautiful shawl!! I’ve never knit with possum but I’m intrigued:)

I was too, it seemed crazy that they would put possum fur in there. They blend it with wool though, as I’m pretty sure the fibre would be too short to spin into yarn otherwise. The mix is 60 wool, 30 possum and 10 silk

Happy Australia Day! We got some rain, at last 🙂 The shawl looks lovely, I really like the gold, grey and black together, the colours remind me of the light and colours of the bush when the sun comes up. How about calling it Dawn?

That is such a great idea Kate, it’s actually a perfect name! I’m glad you got rain, we had a dreadfully hot day in Melbourne, I was actually so surprised it get that hot, and sadly we don’t have the AC

Oh, that must be really tough! I remember about 8 or 9 years ago I was living in Melbourne (without aircon!) and the temperature went up to 45C for days. Nightmare. The only way I could sleep was with the sheets sprayed with water to make them damp and a fan blowing on me! It did the trick long enough to let me get to sleep.

We’ve tried a fan, maybe I should try your trick and damp my sheets too, that’s a good idea!

OK, I have a question. What shape is this beautiful shawl? I would assume rectangle (or maybe a square?) but the way you’re holding it, it looks like a triangle with one angle longer than the other.
I love the idea of possum fur in it.

It is a triangle shawl actually 😊 and one angle is longer that the other. I really like triangular shawl at the moment and they are really easy to make

I thought so, but wanted to be sure. I like that shape. I’ll have to make something like that. Such a nice mix of colors and stripes.
So pretty!

Hihi the Rebecca shawl then? What kind of colours would you suggest for the next sample I make? Yes I think triangles is such a modern look, and I like how they are worked out too.

LOLOL!!! Well i wouldn’t be true if i didn’t say maybe some blues, pastel blue maybe some greys and pastel something of something! Your spot on with that, it really is modern. Got two whirls i might get out and make a shawl 😀

I love those colours too 💙and are you going to join the crochet between the line with two whirls? I’m doing the knit version but the crochet one looks amazing too!

Ooo no, i think just a random shawl. My whirls are very opposite so they won’t work for the two line thing. I bet it will look nice knitted up 😀

Beautiful shawl, and I had never heard of blending possum fur into yarn! What an interesting idea.

Thank you 😊 I thought it was a great idea too, especially considering it apparently helps to reduce the number of possums over there.

Very chic! The name that popped in my mind is Greta, but I don’t know why. Maybe because it’s similar to Great and I think it looks Great? Lol!

Thanks Kate! I had no idea either until I went on holidays to New Zealand. And now I’ve found a local shop that sells the same yarn, how funny!
